Navigating AI Integration in HR: Challenges and Solutions

The adoption of AI in HR has risen significantly in just one year: according to Gartner research, 11% of HR leaders have already implemented it (up from 5%), 9% are already planning implementation (up from 5%), and 18% are conducting pilots and POCs (up from 9%). Only 2% of HR leaders aren’t planning to use AI at all in the future.

But while that excitement is real, and the promise of most efficient and effective HR teams is intriguing, there are also several very real obstacles to the adoption of AI in HR that many teams are still struggling to overcome. That’s natural—after all, generative AI has only very recently become mainstream—but those obstacles are also surmountable with the right strategies. Here’s what you need to know.

Problem: Lack of Knowledge About AI Tools

Solution: Research and cross-functional collaboration

There is a whole range of AI tools, tech, and software on the market these days, and it can be difficult to know which to choose for your HR team. Even traditional HR tech is incorporating AI features, and analysis paralysis can be a big hurdle to overcome.

The solution is to assign a team to conduct in-depth research about potential options, including talking to other HR professionals who are making use of advanced AI already. This team should ideally be cross-functional, so your IT colleagues can weigh in on implementation, user experience, and integrations with other technologies as well.

Problem: Lack of User Knowledge About AI

Solution: Upskilling and training across the HR function

Since AI is new to many HR teams (and organizations in general), it’s only natural that many HR professionals still don’t know how to use it to its fullest capabilities. Invest in training, development, and education around how to use AI efficiently and safely, and you’ll see much greater adoption. Since AI is also evolving quickly, that training should be ongoing as new features and tools arrive as well.

Problem: Lack of a Broader AI Strategy

Solution: Clear goals aligned with business objectives

It’s tempting to jump into using AI in HR just because it’s what everyone else is doing, or because of stakeholder pressure. But before you invest in tools and training, decide what exactly you want to accomplish with your AI strategy. Is it to improve the candidate experience, enhance recruiting, drive efficiency, or something else? With that clear plan (and ethical considerations top of mind as well), you can make better decisions about how and where to use the technology and which tools to choose.

This AI strategy should also not be limited to the HR function alone—team up with your IT team, your legal team, and any other closely related functions so you can develop a company AI policy and strategy to get even better results.

Problem: Concern About Legal and Data Protection

Solution: Research and training

Many broadly used AI tools, like ChatGPT, do come with significant data and privacy concerns, especially for HR teams. Pick the tools you use carefully, like choosing certified bias-free AI for HR tools like Cangrade, and review how they use your company’s and candidates’ data. Also, train employees who will use the tools on how to adhere to privacy regulations and protections.

Problem: Concern About Losing the Human Touch

Solution: Thoughtful, transparent, human-led use of AI

This is one of the top three reasons cited by HR professionals when asked why their organization is not using AI technology to support HR. After all, the human in human resources is a critical element. But using AI shouldn’t mean that technology is making all of your decisions.

First, ensure your AI strategy focuses on what AI excels at (data analysis) and leaves the critical human elements, like writing communications, to the humans. Be sure to be transparent about your use of AI in the hiring process so candidates know what to expect. Regularly review your AI tools, results, and any issues that come up to ensure you’re on top of any potential problems.

With these solutions, you’ll be reaping the full benefits of the adoption of AI in HR in no time. If you are ready to explore how AI can assist your HR team, Cangrade is always available to help.
